General Requirements
- Compost with human waste in it requires approximately a year, undisturbed (no new waste added), before it is safe to use.
- Composting works with both aerobic and anaerobic processes, but it is faster with aerobic processes. Thus, the compost pile should be aboveground to promote growth of aerobic bacteria.
- Human waste won't compost on its own -- it must be mixed with organic material such as food scraps and dried vegetation in its final compost location.
- Dried plants should be added to the toilet after each use. Good materials include sawdust, grass, etc. This helps to prevent odors and begin the composting process.
